Do You Need Tools?
Do I Need Accessories to Learn Reiki?
No. Usui Reiki is a non-invasive energy practice in which practitioners rest their hands gently on or above the body to channel Reiki. It does not depend on medicines, equipment or specific objects. After attunement, your hands are your most important tools.
Three Things Reiki Practice Really Needs
- Attunement: A teacher opens your Reiki energy channel. The beginner course includes two attunements.
- Consistent practice: Practise self-healing hand positions daily. See 12 Reiki Hand Positions for Self-Healing 。
- Cultivating the mind: Use the Five Reiki Principles — do not be angry, do not worry, be grateful, work diligently and be kind to others — as daily guidance.
The Role Accessories Can Play
- Ritual: Familiar arrangements and objects can remind you to practise each day.
- Focus: An object can provide a focal point during wish-setting, meditation or distance Reiki.
- Creating a space: Make your practice environment quieter and more comfortable.

Common Reiki Tools
Common Tools for Reiki Practice
1. Crystals
Crystals are common accessories in Reiki and holistic practice. Practitioners often keep them nearby or hold them during meditation as a focus for attention. Soul Love Center's Usui Reiki beginner course includes using Reiki with infants, children, animals, plants and crystals.
II. Seven-Star Crystal Grids
A seven-star crystal grid usually has one main crystal at its centre and six surrounding crystals, arranged as a six-pointed star formed by two overlapping equilateral triangles. In Reiki practice, it serves as a symbolic tool for focusing intentions, setting wishes and meditation. Some students describe Student Testimonials their experiences of setting wishes with a crystal grid. These are personal accounts and experiences vary. Ask the centre whether grid setup is covered in your course.
3. Pyramids and Protective Boundaries
In Reiki practice, an energetic boundary means using intention and Reiki to create a protected, cleansed space around yourself or a place. The Intermediate course covers rapid space cleansing and protective boundaries against external energy; Advanced includes pyramid boundaries. To explore the Advanced course, visit Advanced Reiki Certification Workshop 。
4. Quiet Sitting and Meditation Supplies
Cushions, yoga mats and light blankets can make seated meditation and self-Reiki more comfortable. The Usui Reiki beginner course includes seated meditation. For structured learning in meditation and insight, see The Beginner Meditation and Insight Workshop 。
5. Practice Journals and Five Principles Cards
A simple notebook can record daily self-healing experiences, emotional changes and insights. Keeping a card with the Five Reiki Principles beside your bed can provide a morning reminder. This is one of the least expensive and most useful accessories for consistent practice.

A Rational View
A Scientific Perspective: Taking a Reasoned View of Crystals and Accessories
We encourage an open and rational approach to practice tools. There is currently no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals themselves have therapeutic effects.
Experiments with Real Crystals and Glass Imitations
Psychologist Christopher French and colleagues at Goldsmiths, University of London, studied 80 participants who meditated for five minutes holding either real quartz or visually identical glass replicas. Both groups reported similar warmth, tingling and other sensations. Participants told beforehand what they might feel were more likely to report those sensations. The researchers attributed the experiences mainly to suggestion and expectation rather than the crystals themselves.
Do Accessories Still Have a Role?
Yes, but their value lies in the person rather than the object. A regular practice corner or a crystal that reminds you to pause can help build habits and bring attention to the present. This is central to holistic practice: tools are reminders, while awareness and practice matter most. Reiki itself also calls for an informed approach. See Does Reiki Work? What Research Says About Stress and Sleep 。
I Ching & Mind Body Spirit
I Ching and Holistic Practice: Awareness Is Your Best Tool
The I Ching combines yin and yang lines into eight trigrams, then pairs the trigrams to form sixty-four hexagrams, providing a way to understand change and balance in all things. In Soul Love Center's teaching, it is used as a framework for self-awareness rather than divination: does your life lean towards movement or stillness? Are you giving too much or holding back excessively?
An “I Ching Practice” That Requires No Purchases
- Spend three minutes each evening reviewing your emotions and energy that day.
- Consider yin and yang: Were you more active (yang) or still (yin) today?
- If unbalanced, deliberately include the opposite tomorrow, such as more rest or more activity.
- Combine this awareness with self-Reiki hand positions to turn insight into self-care.

Buying & Safety Tips
Buying and Using Accessories
Three Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying
- Have I established a daily self-healing habit? If not, beginning to practise matters more than buying supplies.
- Will I actually use this tool regularly?
- Does the seller make exaggerated claims about curing disease, guaranteed winnings or guaranteed wealth? If so, be cautious.
Safety Tips for Use
- Small crystals and stones are choking hazards. Keep them out of reach of babies, young children and pets.
- Do not delay medical care or stop prescribed treatment because you are using an accessory.
- Accessories support personal practice, with experiences varying between people; they should not be regarded as treatment tools.
A Reiki Session Offers a More Direct Experience Than Accessories
