Reiki for Sleep, Anxiety and Emotions: Common Applications Explained
Research evidence · Hong Kong data · Reiki's complementary role · When to seek medical help
“Can Reiki help with insomnia?” “Does it help with anxiety or low mood?” These are questions many people ask when discovering Reiki.
This article takes an informed approach: first examining Hong Kong data and medical definitions, then what Reiki research can and cannot establish. It explores Reiki's complementary role in insomnia, anxiety, emotions and chronic stress, and when professional help is essential.
⚠️ Important Statement: Reiki is an auxiliary method for relaxation and self-care, and it cannot diagnose or treat insomnia, anxiety, depression, or any other diseases, nor can it replace medical or psychological treatment. If you are experiencing related concerns, please consult a registered doctor, clinical psychologist, or other qualified professionals.
At a glance
Reiki can be used as an auxiliary method for relaxation and self-care. Research suggests that Reiki groups show a decrease in anxiety scores, but the quality of the research varies. The NCCIH states that Reiki has not been clearly proven to be effective for any health purpose. The first-line treatment for chronic insomnia is CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia); anxiety and depression should be handled by professional personnel, and Reiki is only suitable as an auxiliary method.

Hong Kong Data
1. Hong Kong Data and Medical Definitions
What Is Insomnia Disorder?
The Department of Health's Family Health Service describes insomnia as difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night or being unable to return to sleep, waking too early and being unable to sleep again, or poor sleep quality despite sleeping, occurring at least three nights a week for three months and affecting daily life.
Sleep Difficulties in Hong Kong
| Indicator (Department of Health Population Health Survey 2014–15) | Result |
|---|---|
| Had sleep disturbance in the 30 days prior to interview (15 years or older) | 48.0% |
| Experience of three or more times per week of 'not being able to fall asleep within 30 minutes' | 6.8% |
| Waking intermittently during sleep three or more times a week | 7.3% |
| Unable to return to sleep after waking early, three or more times a week | 6.0% |
The Department of Health notes that short-term insomnia commonly arises from temporary issues such as exams, a new job, jet lag or changes in the sleeping environment, lasting a few nights to a few weeks. Most cases can improve with good sleep habits. Consult a family doctor if insomnia affects daytime work.
Emotions and Anxiety
The seventh Hong Kong Depression Index Survey, conducted in 2025 by CUHK's Department of Social Work and The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, recorded the highest depression and anxiety indices in the survey's history. See What is the integration of body, mind, and spirit? 。
Evidence
II. Reiki Research: What It Can Explain and What It Cannot Explain
2024 Meta-Analysis of Reiki for Anxiety
A systematic review and comprehensive analysis published in 2024 in BMC Palliative Care, including 13 randomized controlled trials, involving 824 participants aged 18 years or older:
- Overall, the Reiki group showed a significant decrease in anxiety scores (standardized mean difference SMD = −0.82).
- Short-term (3 or fewer sessions) and mid-term (6–8 sessions) treatments have consistent results for general adults and some chronic disease patients regarding health-related or procedural anxiety.
- Results were less consistent for preoperative anxiety and death-related anxiety among cancer patients.
- There are large differences between studies (I² = 88.5%), so interpretation should be cautious.
NCCIH's Overall Conclusion
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that Reiki has been studied for pain, anxiety, and depression, but most studies have low quality and inconsistent results, so Reiki has not been clearly proven effective for any health purpose; there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of an energy field referred to in Reiki. No harmful effects were found in the studies.
How Should These Two Findings Be Understood?
Individual comprehensive analyses show a decrease in anxiety scores for the Reiki group, but due to small study sizes, method variations, and factors such as individual expectations, a quiet environment, and the feeling of being cared for, the results are not conclusive. The most prudent understanding is that Reiki can serve as an auxiliary relaxation technique but should not be considered a treatment. For further reading: Does Reiki Work? Possible Mechanisms
3. How Might Reiki Help Relaxation?
The Reiki Tradition's Account
Traditionally, Reiki is believed to be a 'pipeline' through which energy is guided to help the body and mind return to balance. This is a traditional belief and not scientifically proven mechanism.
A More Likely Explanation: The Relaxation Response
A Reiki session typically includes: a quiet environment, comfortable lying down, gentle touch or placing the hands above the body, more than 20 minutes of uninterrupted time, and the feeling of being cared for. These elements themselves can help one slow down. Researchers also mention that the participants' expectations and beliefs may influence the results.
Self-Reiki: A Daily Time to Pause
After learning Reiki, daily self-practice offers a regular quiet interval. The Judgement commentary on the I Ching's Gen (Keeping Still) hexagram says, “Stop when it is time to stop; move when it is time to move.” For busy city dwellers, this time to pause has value in itself. See The connection between I Ching Philosophy and Reiki Healing 。
Scenario 1 · Sleep
4. Situation One: Insomnia
First-Line Treatment: CBT-I
The American College of Physicians (ACP) strongly recommends in its 2016 clinical guideline that all adults with chronic insomnia receive cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as initial treatment. CBT-I combines sleep-related cognitive therapy, behavioural methods such as stimulus control and sleep restriction, and sleep hygiene education. Only if CBT-I does not work should patients and doctors jointly decide whether to add medication.
The Role Reiki Can Play
- As part of a bedtime relaxation ritual, such as a self-Reiki hand position 10 minutes before bed.
- Complementing good sleep habits, rather than replacing CBT-I or a doctor's advice.
Many people fall asleep during a session
Sleeping while receiving Reiki is common, which reflects the relaxing environment of the treatment; however, this does not mean Reiki can cure insomnia. If insomnia occurs three or more times a week, lasts for three months, and affects daily life, please consult a doctor.
Scenario 2 · Anxiety
5. Situation Two: Anxiety
Everyday Nervousness and Anxiety
The stress of exams, speeches, or work pressure is a common experience for many. A student shared: 'Before a presentation, I use Reiki to calm my anxious feelings and boost my confidence.' This is personal experience, and varies from person to person. Student Testimonials 。
What Does the Research Say?
As mentioned above, a 2024 comprehensive analysis showed that the Reiki group had lower anxiety scores, but the differences were large; NCCIH believes the evidence is still insufficient.
An Anxiety Disorder Cannot Be Managed with Reiki Alone
If anxiety is persistent, severe, or accompanied by palpitations, shortness of breath, or panic attacks, one should first seek medical attention to rule out other physical causes, and then have a professional assess. Reiki can be used as an auxiliary relaxation technique under the guidance of a doctor or therapist, but cannot replace treatment.
Scenario 3 · Emotions
6. Situation Three: Emotional Ups and Downs
The Reiki Tradition's View
Reiki tradition suggests that unprocessed emotions can create energetic blockages. Beginner includes addressing accumulated subconscious emotions; Intermediate includes revisiting past trauma through healing and forgiveness and learning the emotional symbol. These are traditional Reiki practice topics, not psychotherapy.
Students' Experiences
“I am very grateful to have discovered Reiki as a tool that helps me transform difficult feelings such as unease and anxiety. When I use Reiki, images connected with those emotions arise in my subconscious, allowing me to work on clearing the related experiences.”
—A student's personal account
The Five Principles: Daily Guidance for Emotional Care
The first two Reiki principles are, “Just for today, do not be angry and do not worry.” They invite a pause when feelings arise and a return to the present rather than emotional suppression. For their origins, see Mikao Usui 。
Scenario 4 · Stress
7. Situation Four: Chronic Stress and Exhaustion
Holistic Stress Management
Chronic stress calls for a comprehensive approach: adequate sleep, exercise, balanced nutrition, talking with others and professional help when needed. Reiki can be one relaxation tool, rather than the only approach.

Rule Out Physical Causes First When Exhausted
Persistent fatigue and fatigue that does not improve after rest, may have different physical or psychological causes, such as anemia, thyroid problems, or depression. Please seek medical advice to identify the cause, rather than attributing it to 'energy depletion'.
Scenario 5 · Caregivers
8. Situation Five: Caregivers
Caregivers who take care of family members often have little time to take care of themselves. In the sharing sessions, one participant described how, during their mother's treatment, they transmitted Reiki each night, and said that 'the parents' emotions were more positive and calm than expected.' For caregivers, Reiki can be a way to accompany family members while also taking care of their own emotions. However, the treatment of the family member should always be handled by a doctor. Red Flags
9. When Professional Support Is Essential
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Insomnia at least three nights a week, lasting three months and affecting daily life | Consult a family doctor; the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia is CBT-I |
| Persistent low mood or anxiety lasting two weeks or more, affecting work or interpersonal relationships | Consult a doctor, clinical psychologist, or psychiatrist |
| Palpitations, chest pain or difficulty breathing | Seek medical care promptly to rule out physical causes |
| Persistent fatigue that does not improve with rest | Seek medical care to identify the cause |
| Thoughts of self-harm or suicide | Seek professional help immediately; if there is an immediate danger, call 999 |
Hong Kong also has a 24-hour mental health support hotline 18111 (details are based on the latest government announcements). NCCIH reminds that Reiki should not be used as a substitute for regular medical care, or used as a reason to delay seeking medical treatment.
Practice
10. A 15-Minute Relaxation Practice Before Bed
This is a relaxation practice, not a treatment for insomnia:
- Put your phone away and dim the lights an hour before bed.
- Sit comfortably on the bed, bring your palms together and recite the Five Reiki Principles (1 minute).
- Lie down, slowly breathe, and pay attention to the exhalation being slightly longer than the inhalation (3 minutes).
- Those who have completed an attunement can perform self-Reiki hand positions: forehead, crown, chest, and abdomen (about 10 minutes). Those who have not learned can place their hands lightly on their chest and abdomen and continue to slowly breathe.
- If you have not yet fallen asleep, do not force yourself to sleep; get up and do something quiet, and return to bed when you feel sleepy.

FAQ
Reiki, Insomnia, Anxiety and Emotions: Frequently Asked Questions
Can Reiki Cure Insomnia?
There is no evidence that Reiki cures insomnia. The American College of Physicians (ACP) recommends CBT-I as initial treatment for adults with chronic insomnia in its 2016 guideline. Reiki may complement bedtime relaxation, but consult a doctor if insomnia occurs at least three nights a week for three months and affects daily life.
Is There Research Supporting Reiki for Anxiety?
There are some studies. A comprehensive analysis published in BMC Palliative Care in 2024 included 13 randomized controlled trials and 824 participants. It found that the Reiki group showed a significant decrease in anxiety scores, but there was considerable variation among the studies (I²=88.5%). The effects of Reiki on preoperative and death-related anxiety were also inconsistent. NCCIH notes that most Reiki research has low methodological quality and that Reiki has not been clearly proven to be effective for any health-related use.
Can Someone with an Anxiety Disorder or Depression Receive Reiki?
Reiki can be used as an auxiliary relaxation technique under the guidance of a doctor or therapist, but it cannot replace psychiatric or psychological treatment, and it should not be used as a reason to stop or delay conventional treatment.
How Many People in Hong Kong Have Sleep Difficulties?
The Department of Health's Population Health Survey 2014–2015 found that nearly half (48.0%) of people aged 15 and above had experienced sleep disturbance in the previous 30 days. The proportions reporting difficulty falling asleep within 30 minutes, waking during the night, and being unable to return to sleep after waking early at least three times a week were 6.8%, 7.3% and 6.0%, respectively.
Is Reiki healing safe?
NCCIH stated that no harmful effects were found in the research on Reiki. The main risk is that Reiki may be used instead of necessary medical treatment.
What Should I Do If I Have Thoughts of Self-Harm?
Seek professional assistance immediately; if there is an immediate danger, call 999. Reiki is not suitable for handling urgent mental health situations.
